Nanopublication — Chromesthetic Étude — A Major Triad as Color and Form

A Major - Research on Harmony - Variations 10

Claim 1: Chromesthetic Étude — A Major Triad as Color and Form

In this étude, I explore the A Major [1] triad as color and form. A is yellow-orange, C# is blue-green, E is yellow — these are the colors I see when I play the chord, and they become the palette of this small painting. The spread voicing I play at the piano becomes spatial arrangement on paper, each tone finding its place, its weight, its relationship to the others. This is not analysis but practice: the daily work of translating what I hear into what I see.

Context

This painting belongs to my ongoing series of piano études translated into visual form. Working at small scale with acrylic on paper, I treat each variation as I would a musical exercise — direct, unadorned, focused on the essential relationships within the chord. The geometric simplicity is intentional: just as a spread voicing opens up the triad across the keyboard, here the colors open across the surface, each finding room to breathe.

The A Major triad — A, C#, E — maps to yellow-orange, blue-green, and yellow in my chromesthetic experience. These three hues and their interplay are the subject of the work. The warm yellows and ochres dominate, as they should in a key centered on A, while the blue-green of C# provides the counterpoint, the cooler voice within the chord. The composition holds them together the way the voicing holds them together at the keyboard: distinct but inseparable.

A Major has a particular brightness to it, a warmth that sits comfortably in the hand. In this tenth variation, I continue my exploration of how that harmonic character can exist as visual experience — not illustration, but translation.
