Context

The small-format variations in the Research on Harmony series — typically 10×15 cm or 21×30 cm on paper — function as études: daily exercises in translating piano voicings into visual balance. They explore the triadic material of a key without reference to a specific musical composition. Their modest scale matches their modest ambition — these are studies, not statements.

This work operates differently. At 80×80 cm on linen canvas, it engages with twelve specific bars of a specific concerto, translating not just harmonic material but rhythmic structure, melodic contour, and the dynamic arc of tension and release. The scale accommodates this ambition: the dense geometric mass requires physical space to hold its layered complexity, and the open red field needs room to breathe as the musical pressure releases. The canvas format — stretched linen rather than paper — signals durability and compositional intention beyond the daily exercise.

The distinction is not hierarchical. The études serve the practice; this work is a product of the practice applied to a particular musical encounter.
