Nanopublication — Large Format on Linen Canvas as Deliberate Departure
Claim 4: Large Format on Linen Canvas as Deliberate Departure
I paint this Bb Major [1] study as a large work (81 × 100 cm) on linen canvas, departing from the small paper études that characterize most of my Synesthetic Explorations. The shift in scale and support reflects the expanded harmonic scope of rhythm changes as source material — this is not a simple triad exercise but a painting that engages with a complete harmonic form.
Context
The majority of works in my Synesthetic Explorations collection are small-format études on paper — typically between 10 × 15 cm and 21 × 30 cm. These small works function as direct, unadorned translations of individual triadic studies at the piano: quick, focused, essential. They are the visual equivalent of a musician's daily exercises.
This painting departs from that practice. At 81 × 100 cm on linen canvas, it occupies a fundamentally different material and spatial register. Linen canvas has a different tooth, a different weight, a different relationship to the brush and to acrylic paint than paper. The surface invites broader gestures, larger color fields, and a compositional complexity that small paper études deliberately avoid.
The shift in scale corresponds to the richness of the harmonic source material. Where a simple triad étude translates three pitches into a direct color arrangement, this work engages with rhythm changes — a complete harmonic form with cadential movement, a bridge, and the structural logic of AABA. The painting needed room to hold that complexity: the large purple and orange fields that establish the tonic triad, the central corridor of stacked geometric forms that carries the harmonic movement, and the dark anchoring passages that provide gravitational weight.
