Artemis as Geometric Triad

The three geometric forms on the right—semi-circle, circle, triangle—embody Artemis [1] as material presence, while the empty left half represents Apollo as pure light. The siblings exist in complementary spatial relationship across the vertical axis.

Context

The Apollo/Artemis duality offers a foundational mythological structure for exploring complementary forces—not as opposites in conflict, but as siblings in balance. Apollo represents clarity, light, rational order, the solar principle. Artemis embodies material presence, lunar cycles, the wild, embodied knowledge. In Greek mythology, these twin deities born to Leto represent two modes of divine power that complete rather than cancel each other.

I translate this mythological structure into spatial terms through compositional division. The left half remains empty—a field of pure light where Apollo exists as absence, as illumination without form. The right half concentrates geometric materiality: three shapes that together embody Artemis. The semi-circle, circle, and triangle work not as individual symbols but as a triad of form—material presence against void, embodiment against light. The vertical axis dividing the composition enacts the sibling relationship: two halves of one whole, complementary rather than opposed.

This geometric encoding allows the mythological framework to exist as visual structure rather than illustration. The viewer encounters the spatial relationship before (or without) knowing the mythological reference. The work functions on formal terms—division, geometry, emptiness, presence—while carrying the deeper structure of twin deities in eternal dance.
