Nanopublication — Material Translation of Narrative

Claim 2: Material Translation of Narrative
I translated Ramon [1]'s story into ceramic bas-relief form, using the medium's permanence to freeze his moment of reckoning—the sculptural depth and shadow creating visual tension between order (geometric forms) and chaos (organic erosion).
Context
The choice of ceramic was deliberate. Clay's permanence through high-temperature firing mirrors the irreversibility of Ramon's actions—what's done cannot be undone. The medium literally vitrifies, becoming stone-like, just as Ramon's obsession hardened into destruction.
The bas-relief format allowed me to work with depth and shadow as narrative elements. The sculptural relief creates zones of light and dark that shift as the viewer moves, embodying the tension between Ramon's ordered ideal and the chaotic reality he created [2]. Geometric forms suggest his imposed structure, while organic erosion patterns represent the natural vitality he destroyed.
I worked the clay to capture that specific moment: not the garden in its prime, not the aftermath in full desolation, but the instant of realization. The visual language needed to hold both order and its collapse simultaneously—the geometry breaking down, the precision revealing its brittleness.
The piece measures 32×44cm, a scale intimate enough to draw viewers close, to make them complicit in examining the details of Ramon's work. The 5cm depth creates substantial shadow play, turning the flat narrative into dimensional experience.
Created at Profils [3] et Reliefs workshop in Paris under master ceramist Isis Gondoin, the work underwent high-temperature firing with custom glazes to achieve the desired surface quality—a finish that suggests both polish and decay, control and its unraveling.
