The Merging of Reader and Text

In READER [1], I symbolize the moment of complete absorption where the reader's mind and the book become indistinguishable. The sculpture's crescent form is simultaneously a reading figure and an open book — not because it ambiguously resembles both, but because at the moment I depict, they are one. The reader has dissolved into the text; the text has become the reader's inner world. This is the instant of total immersion, where consciousness and narrative fuse.

Context

The subject of READER is not a person reading a book. It is the moment when the distinction between person and book ceases to exist — the instant of complete cognitive absorption where the reader's mind has left the physical world entirely and inhabits the text. Everyone who reads knows this moment: the room disappears, the body is forgotten, and what remains is a single arc of attention curved around a world that exists only in the imagination.

I wanted to capture this as a sculptural form. The challenge was that any figurative representation — a person holding a book, a face bent over pages — would preserve exactly the separation I was trying to dissolve. A reader and a book are two things. What I depict is the state where they become one thing. The crescent form achieves this: it is a body curved in concentration, and it is pages spread open, and it is impossible to see one without seeing the other. The dual reading is not ambiguity — it is the content of the work.

The posture itself carries meaning. The inward curve, the enclosure, the way the form turns away from the surrounding space and toward its own interior — this is the physical signature of deep reading. The body withdraws. Attention narrows. The reader creates a private architecture of concentration, and READER gives that architecture a permanent shape.
