Context

"Sometime Ago" was composed by Argentine pianist and composer Sergio Mihanovich (b. 1931). The piece became a jazz standard recorded by numerous artists and is characteristic of Mihanovich's lyrical, European-inflected approach to jazz composition. Its waltz meter sets it apart from most jazz standards, giving it a particular quality of suspension — three beats circling rather than four beats driving. The melody sits above a C Major harmonic field with characteristic chromatic movement and the occasional dominant suspension that delays resolution.

The inspiration operates at the level of emotional character rather than direct transliteration. I am not mapping the melody note-for-note into color or tracing the rhythm into compositional structure. What carries over is the mood: the way warmth and melancholy coexist in the piece, the way the waltz rhythm creates both grace and a slight sense of being unmoored, the way resolution is perpetually near but gently withheld. These qualities informed the painting's internal tensions — the warm all-over palette against the heavy dark cluster at center, the clear chord tones against the ambiguity of the sus inflection.
