Nanopublication — Étude as Research Unit

Claim 2: Étude as Research Unit

This painting is a visual étude — a focused study of a single harmonic structure, where each variation in the series isolates a different voicing or register arrangement of the G minor triad, building research [1] through systematic repetition.

Context

The étude tradition in music serves a specific function: focused, repetitive work within deliberate constraints, building understanding through sustained engagement with limited material. I apply the same principle to painting. Each variation is not a finished statement or a standalone expressive work — it is a working-through, an exercise that holds value as one unit within a larger investigative series.

Meaning accumulates not in any single piece but across the body of variations. Variation 3 explores one particular voicing spread of G minor; other variations in the series explore the same triad in different registers, spacings, and compositional arrangements. The series resists overinterpretation of individual works — each étude is deliberately modest, a node in a research program rather than a destination.
