Ephemeral Jazz Tribute Through Sand Sculpture

I translate Charlie [1] Parker [2]'s improvisational legacy into an ephemeral sand bas-relief on Salou Beach, where the medium's impermanence mirrors the fleeting nature of jazz performance—beauty that exists fully only in the moment before tide and wind reclaim it.

Context

This work honors Charlie Parker through material choice that embodies jazz's temporal essence. Sand sculpted directly into beach substrate creates monumental scale (150×120cm) while acknowledging inevitable erasure. The medium resists permanence—each incoming tide, gust of wind, or footstep begins dissolution.

Working within the Untamed [3] Creations collection, I engage materials that refuse traditional sculptural stability. Sand provides no archival promise. The sculpture existed briefly during August 2022 on Salou Beach, Spain, before coastal forces returned it to undifferentiated shoreline. This impermanence forms part of the work's meaning rather than technical limitation.

Parker's bebop revolution centered on improvisation—unrepeatable performances that vanished into air the moment they concluded. The ephemeral sand relief translates this condition into spatial medium. Where his solos existed only during performance, this tribute exists only during its brief coastal presence. Both reject permanence as artistic value.

Photographic documentation preserves what tide dissolved, but the photograph records absence as much as presence. The work's completion includes its disappearance. Beauty most alive when it cannot last.
